I decided to try planting some new vegetables in my garden this spring. I planted Swiss chard, Brussel Sprouts, and asparagus. I bought the seeds for the Swiss Chard, the seedlings for the Brussel Sprouts and the crowns of asparagus. Asparagus come back year after year. One crown can keep growing for 20 years! I had never planted asparagus before. I read the instructions a couple of times. Then I planted them in the ground. I finished planting the rest of my garden. I was excited to see when everything would start to grow. I told everyone who came to my house or would look at my pictures about my garden. I was excited to tell them what I had planted. My mom mentioned that my asparagus didn’t look right. She wasn’t the first person to mention this either. The asparagus was the only thing that hadn’t started growing yet. I wondered if I had planted it wrong. I went online and started reading… I had planted my asparagus upside down! I didn’t even know it was possible to plant something upside down. I had pumpkins growing that I didn’t even plant yet I couldn’t even grow something I had planted. Failure can happen when you try something new. Even when you follow the instructions. Embrace it. When you fail, you learned something new - what didn't work. Don't let failure discourage you from your next success. Take the lessons that you learned and apply them to the next thing you choose to do. Share your story with someone else so they too can learn what you learned. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable and talk about your failure with other people, you'll be surprised to hear you aren't alone. After I did some more reading, I dug up my upside down asparagus. Then I planted them the correct way.
