9/23/2019 0 Comments Health Benefits of GardeningWhen I first moved out and had a yard to care for, gardening was not top of my enjoyment list. I gardened, but it was more of a chore than a pleasurable activity. Over the years, this shifted without me really realizing it until one day it hit me, I like gardening.
This enjoyment I now get from gardening has been an evolution. I can remember thinking of ways I could increase my physical activity in my everyday life and gardening was a simple option for me. Gardening is beneficial for both your mind and body. These are 10 benefits from gardening. Physical Health 1. Full body workout Gardening uses your whole body which helps strengthens bones, muscles and joints. It improves your balance, creates resistance training and involves both your upper and lower body in exercise. 2. Daily Activity Gardening is considered moderate-intensity exercise. This means gardening uses more energy than walking. Exercising with a purpose as you get a beautiful and/or delicious outcome is my kind of thing to keep me motivated to move daily. 3. Healthier Eating Vegetable gardening can lead to you eating more fruits and vegetables. Eating them at their peak freshness allows you to benefit from all their nutrients. When you put in the effort to garden, you’re more likely to eat what you’ve grown. Also, children who are involved in gardening are more likely to try new foods. 4. Vitamin D Exposure Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin”. It helps you have strong bones and teeth. When your skin gets sunshine on it, your body uses the vitamin D from the sun to help calcium be absorbed. Calcium is the main component of bones. Without vitamin D, our bodies can’t absorb calcium. 5. Decreases Risk of Chronic Diseases Regular exercise can prevent chronic diseases such as: high blood pressure, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. Having a garden that you tend to regularly can help prevent or delay your from developing a chronic disease. 6. Mental Exercise Gardening involves using your problem solving skills, sensory awareness and learning. These all help with keeping your brain healthy. It also brings meaning and purpose to your life. 8. Stress Reliever When you’re stressed, your body can’t rest and repair itself. Gardening is a way to provide your body rest. It allows yourself to slow down. When you’re gardening, you can focus on the here and now and put your worries aside. 9. Mood Booster Gardening gives you something to something to look forward to.
